Most of my animals (family with fur) I have personally rescued from the streets, as starving strays. For one of them I paid a $75 adoption fee from my former NYC vet (it helped to cover some of his medical expenses after he was surrendered to the vet by a former "owner" who didn't want to pay for essential vet care).

I refuse to "buy" an animal when there are so many that are in shelters and in need of rescue.

Let's see.. my beagle/bassett was listed through a no kill shelter (the lady wanted help finding a good home without having to cage him in the shelter).. I was allowed to decide my price as all she wanted was a donation to the shelter in question. As I recall, I had $80 put aside to get a dog when I started looking, and I gave it all as my donation.

our oldest schnauzer was from the pound and we got him for like $25.. (we were his last chance.. if he came back he'd be killed imediately)

and then the younger schnauzer (who is 9 yrs old) was from a breeder.. he was $175 .. Which is less than half than the rest of the puppies.. he was the last one she had because he was too big to show as a miniature.. (fully grown he is the size of a Standard Schnauzer) We went to a breeder at the time because no one had any available schnauzers in the shelters around here .. (and my mother wanted a puppy.. and was VERY particular about it being a schnauzer)

I rescued a pure bred German Shepherd and purebred Doberman Pinscher. Both are great specimens of the breeds. Everyone thinks my Doberman is show quality. That doesn't matter to me though and both were fixed the day after I got them. I would have loved to had some pups from the Dobie but he is proof that there are too many out there now. Spay and neuter.

We have 2 cats. One was a stray the other we paid right around $100 from a shelter. That was to cover shots, spaying, etc.

Nothing - ours was adopted from a couple who could no longer take care of her and they wanted her to have a good home.

Our previous dog also had no adoption fee - she was a senior who was dumped at the shelter by her "family" and the shelter was happy to have someone who would take her, otherwise they would have had to euthanize her right away.

$5 adoption fee for my two rescued hamsters, and
my cat was a freebie off the streets and into a loving home

most all of my pets (cats, mutt dogs and pure breed dogs, hamsters, chickens, goats, etc...) in my life have been rescue animals besides a few betta fish bought from pro.breeders

My cat was free because the owners were going to abandon her becasue their cat had got pregnant (it was their own stupid fault) and my dog was free because he was about to go to a shelter. He was only 8 weeks old!

I payed $0.00 for my golden - I rescued Him.
I payed $800.00 for my Great Dane!
Honestly the golden is a much better dog than the Dane.
I will always rescure from here on out!

$450.00
Registered MaineCoon. Supposed to be a show cat but he's head shy so the breeder sold him.
All my other kitties were shelter cats.
