Because it is an impoverished Country that does not stress strength and dignity to their women. Women are often given the strenous, "hard labor" low pay type jobs there so many women see that they can make much more money selling themselves. They are forced to do what ever it takes to help their families, especially in the smaller towns.

I am often amazed of this kind of questions, as if there are no prostitutes, poor people, etc. in the USA.

Unfortunately, Americans go to Tijuana to do three things:
1. Get drunk or wasted (since they can not do it legally in the US until they are 21, so we get all the 18, 19 and 20 years olds who want to get drunk)
2. To look for cheap sex.
3. And fortunately they do get some families who really want to visit Mexico, and surfers, beach lovers, etc.

The reason why you see a lot of prostitutes in plain sight is because that's what a lot of tourists want, so you see them near the Revolucion Ave. (the tourist zone), they are at a street called Coahuila and the red zone goes around for several blocks and you can see a lot of Americans there “using the services provided”.

The people in Tijuana really hate this fact, that the tourism the city gets is that kind of tourism, and not cultural or family oriented tourism.

All the bars in the avenue are designed for Americans, who want and love the tequila shots, the cheap sex, the getting wasted, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of people don't like that either, but you know that I am right when I say that that is the mainly tourist attraction. It’s sad but true.

Most of Americans that go to Tijuana never visit the Tijuana's Cultural Center, the malls, the really nice restaurants and hotels.
Not even the bars that locals go to, that are nicer. And of course we never see anybody with their outskirts in the rest of the city, just in that zone, which locals never visit.
The same as you, that maybe you never visit that zone in your own city.

That's why much of those people help and contribute to the bad image that Tijuana has, that's what they are looking for and that's what they get.
Tijuanenses are really annoyed of this image, because they are really good and hardworking people. Tijuana has a big cultural movement that is recognized around the world, great painters, writers, photographers, dancers, etc. are from Tijuana and still live there.

And believe me there are a lot of people who do that kind of job in ALL the countries in the world. Each and every city, even the littlest town has its own red zone as they call it.

I CAN TELL YOU WENT TO TIJUANA PASSING MARRIACHE PLAZA.

BELIVE IT OR NOT THAT STREET IS A HISTORIC PLACE CAUSE NOT ONLY ARE THERE MARRIACHE AND BANDA MUSICIANS THERE,,,, BUT THAT IS THE ORIGINAL DOWNTOWN TIJUANA AS WELL AS THE 1st SHOPPING PLACE WHERE EVEN TODAY IT IS A GOOD PLACE TO GO BUY MANY STUFF NEEDED FOR TODAY AT A VERY GOOD SHOPPING PRICE.
THE BAD THING THERE IS THAT THE " RENTAL GIRLS " ARE THERE AND ACCORDING TO THE RULES OF PERMIT FOR THEM,,, THEY CAN ONLY BE THERE AND CAN'T WORK OUTSIDE THERE LIMITED AREA.
SAD TO SAY MANY DO IT FOR THE MONEY AND FEW FOR THE FUN OF IT. IT IS TRULLY SAD AND THEY FALL VICTUM TO THIS CAUSE THEY THINK THEY CAN MAKE MORE AND NORMALLY THEY ARE RIGHT. BUT THEY ARE BUISSNESSES THAT PAY MORE.

BORDER CITIES WILL HAVE A PROSTITUTE ARE BUT AS YOU GO MORE SOUTH,,, YOU WON'T SEE THAT.

HERE IN THE STATES,,,,,, YOU FIND THE SAME.

Out of desperation women prostitute themselves...they need money to feed the kids and keep their families going. Since a lot of women have no education this is a quick way to earn a little money. It is very sad situation.

There is prostitution here in Mexico, yes, but not as much as in USA or in Poland, Netherlands. What about Cuba?

It's not legal, its their way of living, at least they know they have to charge. In USA they just show thier breasts for fun and dont even got payed.

because american men go there with american dollars, which are still (for now) worth alot more in mexico than the mexican currency itself.

and they know that the men will pay.
