GWB did not want any competition as the most evil man in the world. Actually he did not have to do away with Saddam to win the title.

Below is an hour long show produced by CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corperation - it is well worth watching
http://peersmyanmar.vodpod.com/video/50540-cbc-the-fifth-estate-the-lies-that-led-to-war
The problem is that there was no "reason" but a few men who are in power believe somthing - something that was wrong and still is wrong - the beliefs of 1/2 a dozen men mistakn in their idea's have ordered the deaths of multiple thousands
Generals cry out - and are labeled - disgaurded and no more attention is paid to them as the men in power seem to hold as if by magic the loyal and unquestioning media a servant then and a servant now
But in that service there is an odd question - who are these men in service to ? The politicans seem to get their answers from either thin air or else another unseen force feeds them both - and the media and politicans listen to them more than the people who pay for lavish lifestyles fittng of any cult leader
General Wes Clark - has said that
"This is not world war 3. Unless we make it that way."
There is again a belief - A belief that Iran is dangerous and that Israel's life is in peril - The Israeli's themselves are caught up in this belief that the end is nigh unless swift action is taken in drastic attempts to save themselves now -
The belief is shared - The President hears them and the media hears the President and the people hear the media
No one is listening to the Generals
Take world war 2 - as that is used now more and more as the example of choice
Hilter lost a war because he interfered with his Generals - The master of spin of propaganda and of belief was after all a Cpl - who had a belief not a General not an Admiral
Bush - who has invaded Afganistan - Hitler who invaded the Rhineland and then the Chec's was confronted at Poland by an Empire
Bush has invaded Iraq - and looks now to Iran
Russia see's Iran in the same light that England saw Poland -
Iran may or may not fall - Poland did fall -
Russia will fight and so will China - For a belief that the American invasion of Afganistan lead to the invasion of Iraq and then ------what where will they stop if they are allowed another nation ?
If Iraq was invaded based on the lies and self deceptions of 12 men or so - Imagine what these same 12 men or so have convinced themselves of this time ?
Prisons that torture people camps in off shore nations rendition threats of mushroom clouds threats of world war 3 -
Are these suicidal men who have looked into the world and cast their faults unto it ? As they look out of their heavily guarded offices and see the world and all it offers them is a mirror of themselves we as a species are doomed

Oil and Israeli interests
When elected, Bush was opposed to "nation building," but Dick Cheney brought in eight fellow neocons who advocated "regime change" and re-building Iraq. This was before 9/11 and had nothing to do with Bush's war on terrorism.
Cheney's group all belonged to PNAC or IASPS. IASPS advocated regime change to increase Israeli security, while PNAC focused on our Middle East allies but named only Israel. Using 9/11, Cheney and the neocons convinced Bush to go against the long-standing conservative principles he proclaimed during his election campaign

Because GWB needed to avenge his father, get their oil, cover up his involvement in 911, he is the Antichrist etc, etc, etc.
Is that what you wanted to hear? I am so sick of the same tired arguments. Bottom line is that we have proven time and time again that the world is better off with Sadam out of power and if you chose to really look at the evidence the world is safer because we are there.

I guess the short answer is because they could.
Still blows me away to this day that they got away with it.
