hold a carrot in your teeth, and let the shire take the carrot from your mouth?

No, I wouldn't, but it's because i don't give treats by hand and/or mouth, as I feel that it teaches horses to be demanding beggars and eventually biters (not all, mind you, I know that there are folks who do it and get by with it) but I don't want to contribute to even one horse vice if I have a choice. But, if I was going to do it, the fact that the horse is a Shire would make not a whit of difference.

I do that with my horses. I would only do it with a horse I know & trust, even if it is a shire. I used to do it with my horses in the past, and the only horse I own now that I would never do it with is my mini - I don't trust her as far as I could throw her, and I don't want her thinking it's OK to bite near my face - she bites enough as it is.
My other horses are more ("NICE") and won't bite, so it's just a cute moment to share with your horse.
Although I hate carrots and hate how they taste and don't like having them in my mouth.

Hmm.. it depends on the particular horse. Most horses are fine as long as it is a long carrot. Though I wouldn't try it with an unknown horse. I do with my horses quite often though! They probably think I'm a bit odd and wonder what I'm doing but as long as they get the carrot their happy.

The answers are all good. I just want to say that I envy you. Shires are beautiful horses.

First off, why is it so important that its a shire? I mean, yeah they're big... OK massive, but that doesn't mean they're vicious. But yes, guilty as charged.

I wouldn't do that with any horse. I don't trust those big teeth. Even the gentlest horse can bite and I certainly wouldn't want to loose my face.

yeah, why not? if you do it with a pony, why not a shire? the size should not make a difference.

Its probably not one of the brightest things, but yeah I have been known to do it with my guys.

Probably not some broncy snot that has no respect, but with a calm horse, yeah.

I would, but you need to careful and know your horse. What difference does the breed make?

I have done it with my horses ( and they are both very large) not something I make a habit of though.
