I hate to hear this, it is such a serious thing. I lost my husband to suicide, and depression is one of the biggest cases.
His parents definitely need to know about this, Even if he gets mad at you it is better to save a life. No matter if it is for attention of he is serious, this is a serious situation that needs some attention from others. Let anyone know, a councelor, his parents, anyone who may can help and trust.
Here is a list of hot lines for suicide below. I belong to a
group of suicide survivors and there is no grieve worse than
that. They have no idea how much it will affect his family forever.

Amy obviously there is more to this then being caught cheating at a game of BS. Perhaps you could speak confidentially to either his parents and/or a school guidance counselor. Lots of people become more depressed at this time of year, depending a lot on their lot in life. If you and your friends can talk with this young fella perhaps even one of you could escort him to the hospital to talk things over with a professional therapist there. Regardless do not take this threat as an idle threat as far too many people don't take this serious and any time that someone begins talking about self harm it should be taken seriously. Best of luck to you and your friend.

If I were you and you really care about your friend I'd tell someone you trust. You can also do searches on the internet to find a hotline near you. If he really is suicidial they can at least contain him until he is not depressed, and get him some kind of help. There maybe more to this than you even know. Maybe there's problems at home or whatever.

Regardless of statistics on suicide rates listed above, you need to talk to your parent or a school counselor. Even if he is just reaching out, this is not something that should be taken lightly. Your friends life could literally depend on it.

I read somewhere that 90% of people who talk about it, will never actually do it. They just want attention. or even a cry for help, but won't really do it.

Definitely, tell his parents or a school counselor. If you can't reach him, you have to tell an adult who can.
