Everyone is different. And so they can mesh with an aggressive partner or friend. Imagine two super ambitious, egotistical, domineering, hard headed people dating. Did you imagine it? They'd get into so many fights! Plus, everyone comes with different life experiences and upbringing, so everyone is socialized differently. In my family, we have three children and I'm the oldest, so I have to be semi-submissive and follow a straight arrow to set an example for my siblings and to make my parents proud. The middle child doesn't have this pressure, so she can be the wild and crazy one. Submissive can be bad but it can also be very good. You avoid fights that shouldn't be fought. You can hold together a relationship longer and teach the other person to compromise. I've submitted myself to the yuppie world and love the success and the freedom to shop...wooohooo :)
Anyways, to each their own.

well they are most likely self conscious and have low self-esteem or get off on being dominated

it may have to do with the way they were brought up. if their parents had an authoritarian style of parenting that could def have something to do with it.
