It seems like my parents went nuttier when we were younger- more lights, more decos, blah blah. Now we barely do anything. Do you think familes "grow out" of Christmas when people grow up and move away?

Christmas, though a religious holiday, has always favored towards the children... so, i would think it natural to see it not be as big a deal in a family with no children... in fact, i have friends who do not have children who don't put trees up at all... BUT!! all my friends with children go all out....

I am at that point right now in my Life (an Empty-Nesting Single Retiree -- was a Long Term Single Parent) ...

So this year, with the Adult Children OUT of my home .. the Lights outside are more subdued (less), the inside is not as decorated, and I am relaxing .. going through the house to clean it out (and I am also going to TRANSITION ... I want to sell my home -- so the first step is to SLIM Down on possessions/things in the HOME for sure) ... and just making sure things are fixed up BEFORE I put my HOME on the market.

As far as "growing out of Christmas" ... I don't think so .. just TRANSITIONED to a NEW stage of life ... and that is for sure. I STILL Love the Season, I still enjoy the REASON for it .. just don't like the overt commercialization!

I don't think so, maybe some people do. I don't think I ever will, there is just something about the spirit of the season. My kids are still young, but I try to teach them that there is more to Christmas than presents and Santa. I think that as long as people remember that Jesus is the reason for the season, Christmas will be brighter than ever! And remember, everything seems bigger when you are little!

I'm 29 and don't have any children but I always deco the house like crazy! I think it's just a matter of how much certain traditions mean to you. I also craze pumpkins and dye Easter eggs with my boyfriend but I certainly understand older people who don't have children in the house anymore toning it down.

Yes, I would. I just had my first baby in September.. at age 32, but I have always loved the Christmas season. I love decorating and baking, I love shopping.. and doing it early! I would never grow out of Christmas.. unless maybe when I am elderly and can't move as much anymore.. Best Wishes!

I don't have kids and I love Christmas. But, I'm 26 and I've never had kids. So, don't know about the aging thing when kids move out. I know my parents are going all out this year because all of their kids are coming home for Christmas.

Christmas has downsized with my parents. I enjoy seeing my parents on Christmas. I have stepkids and I have to say that it's not as fun with them because they act like spoiled brats. I don't think it's their fault. I think they are having a hard time because of their parents' divorce. Mom is clueless. Dad is powerless. I try to be positive but it's very difficult. It's no fun giving gifts to kids that don't really appreciate the time and effort I put in. My stepdaughter seemed to take great pride in telling me that she completely trashed the boots I bought her that she said she wanted. It wasn't that they got ruined but the way she told me. (completely insensitive.) I'm not trying to buy their affections. I would never do that. I know my role. I know also that my stepkids are lucky to have me because I'm nice and easy going. I do little things for them. Of course they still get surprised me when dad tells them it was me that thought of it. (I'm like duh! I pay attention.)
