I didn't have to wear a bike helmet or pads, I could swim in the creek without having to worry about whether it was sanitary (oh well, I still do on occassion), we waded through the cow-yard ankle deep in manure while barefoot with cuts on our feet, stayed outside until the streetlights came on in the summer, never washed our hands or our food while outside, rode the pigs over at Grandpa's the went down to the bottom of the feild to dig for arrowheads, went up in the hills for hours and talked to trees (not kidding)-- yeah life was better in the 60's and 70's when I was growing up. Of course that could be the rose-coloured glasses.....
Wait a minute .... I still never wash my food when I'm outside That's what an apron is for anyways. :)
Oh Mac -- 1988?? You're such a Baby!! My Marriage is older than you, Dear One! and I wonder why I think of myself as Mom........

Before the 60's and 70's, politics was ruled by predominantly conservative ideas. In my opinion that is a bad thing because threre was only one side to every argument. I think it's great that all things are now considered before decisions are set in stone. Personally, I am a liberal. I am not a bad person. We don't all share the same values. But I still respect other peoples' opinions that differ from my own. Perhaps you will consider giving that a go.

Like Haz, I was born in 1960 also. I remember a time when we could buy our own weapons of mass destruction at the local fireworks stand and spend hours after dark, (without any worries) setting off our fireworks.
I and my friends would leave the house about 8 am and not return until we had explored a quadrant of the city, walked 20 miles and been wet and dried out 4 or 5 times from wading through the creeks throughout the day. (No worries)
I could go on with this nostalgia forever, but why make evryone bored.

Wow, this really dates me, but here goes. I was born in 1960, so can answer about both decades you are asking about. In the 60's I remember just running wild with my neighborhood friends. You didn't worry about pedophiles, being kidnapped, or any of the stuff parents have to worry about nowadays. The music was also FANTASTIC, as well in the 70's. Being a teenager in the 70's ROCKED! Drinking age was 18, no worries about AIDS, $3.00 a gallon gas, or weapons of mass destruction. They were times of much less stress than we are living in now. I'm going to cast my vote for "Better" growing up in those times. It should be interesting to see how many other "old timers" respond to this.

Well, I wasn't born until 1982, but I love the 1960's!
It just seems that life was so much better in many ways ~ there certainly wasn't so much scare-mongering or 'health & safety' nonsense. Children could play out until dark, often while their parents had no idea where they were.
I'm pretty sure I must have spent my previous life in the 60's, and maybe that's why I love it so?! :)

I can't answer personally since I was born in 1980. I think it's about the same. Things have changed for sure but I think that advances in technology have made it easier to keep on top of things now, it has also made us way more busy and it's harder to get away from things like work, even on a day off.

There wasn't any high speed internet (Gore hadn't invented it yet). You'd actually have to go "o-u-t-s-i-d-e" to interact with people. Or so I've heard. It must have been horrible.
