What is there difference between underground, and mainstream?

Here is an easy differentiation: If it gets airplay on the radio or TV ad nauseam, it is mainstream. If not, then it is underground.

Underground artists are usully not widely known. They tend to just be known in their local commmunities and most arent signed by record labels.

Mainstream artists have record deals with record companies and are more popular because they get more exposure. They are known in areas outside their hometown and have music videos on channels like MTV and BET

I believe underground is music that is recorded & released by an undiscovered artist, who is not signed with a label. Mainstream is stuff you hear on the radio. Albums that are released by major labels.

In the ninties, grunge was underground until bands like Nirvana got noticed and then boom! All of the sudden, big record companies are signing grunge bands left and right and dumping their other commercial bands, who in turn, get signed to smaller independent record labels.

The definition of irony, right there...

underground is a band that is not well known possibly not even signed.
mainstream bands are bands who's music plays on MTV or radios(MCR, FOB, Cute is What We Aim For)
