My friend (why I lack details) has a 1998 convertible BMW she said its a 3 series. Any how we went on a road trip. Gassed up and the gas flap would not close, after messing with it (lock doors-unlock doors, shut car on and off) we went on our way. Few hours later got home and went to get my backpack out of the trunk, trunk would not open.... its been a weeek and still no trunk access and the gas flap still wont lock. I really need into the trunk to get my back pack. She said there is not a manual bypass to open the trunk. How do we get into the trunk?

The E36 3 series uses a "push-button key hole" opener.

In the unlocked position, the trunk is locked and unlocked via the central locking/alarm remote.

You can disable this by putting the key in the keyhole to lock it. When locked by this method, the central locking/alarm remote will not be able to unlock the trunk.

Make sure this lock is not engaged (by manually putting the key in, turning it, and pushing the trunk button).

If I'm not mistaken, the keyhole should be vertical when unlocked, and horizontal when locked.

If you've already tried this, then you are likely to have a loose linkage, in which your only hope is to get it to the dealer.

I don't know if this will work on a BMW, but once when I had the same problem on a VW Jetta. the mechanic lowered the rear-seat arm rest and went through the fabric there into the trunk with a screwdriver duct-taped to a long stick and used it to unfasten the latch on the trunk lid. Once loose, the trunk opened and we could fix the lock. Might help...good luck.

below the driving force's area sprint is a chain of relays which appear as if small boxes, a pair of million inch sq. with 4 to 5 prongs that plug right into a sockets. there is one observed as a "convenience relay" and is sky blue in colour that especially operates the front domicile windows. sorting out this relay is somewhat in contact in spite of the undeniable fact that it somewhat is particularly unplugged and extra to the dealership for sorting out. in the event that they gained't attempt it, they are approximately $10 US. solid good fortune.
