A Passive defense waits to react to a stimulus, while an Active defense initiates a response beforehand, in an attempt to prevent the event from occurring.

spines on a lobster are a passive defense--the lobster does nothing--u step on or grab the spine

the claws (pincers) are an active defense--the lobster bites u after u step on or grab it
