Yes, of course, Mars has been visible for many months, not just starting tonight. Some of the dates above are wrong. Closest approach to Earth is on December 19 and opposition is on December 24.

Yes everybody who pays attention has been aware of where Mars is in the night sky for the past few months. It doest "start this evening" so whoever told you that obviously doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

It's just that its at its closest to Earth right now for a while until the next opposition is due (which happens every couple of years) so appears brighter than usual and is a good view through a medium sized telescope (8-10 inches). I shall be having a look at it and I suggest you do the same if you get a chance.

I expect your friend will tell you its larger than the Moon next!

You can see it this evening, or any evening for the next seven months.

Look northeast as soon as the sky grows dark, and you can't miss it! For the next three weeks, Mars will be the brightest object in the evening sky except for the moon. It's only rival in evening brightness is Sirius. You're highly unlikely to confuse them, however. Sirius is in the southeast and blue-white. Mars is northeast and noticeably orange.

Before anyone waxes too fat over Mars' brightness, consider that in the pre-dawn sky, Venus will come out while Mars is still in view. Venus is many times brighter than either Mars or Sirius.

Yes. It has been visible in the evening for many weeks in the evening; and much longer than that in the predawn morning sky. I have seen it for some time now, rising a little earlier each night.

Spaceguy is right. You can see Mars most anytime. Of course, if there are clouds in the way, you might not see it.

Happy star gazzing

I'll defer to SPACEGUY on this one...
It's been visible for months now, but we're reaching 'oppostion' tonight, where Earth and Mars are in their closest proximities in their respective orbits...
Clear Skies!
