John Adams, 1776 - "It is the duty of all men in society, publicly, and at stated seasons, to worship the SUPREME BEING, the great Creator and Preserver of the universe. And no subject shall be hurt, molested, or restrained, in his person, liberty, or estate, for worshipping GOD in the manner most agreeable to the dictates of his own conscience; or for his religious profession or sentiments; provided he doth not disturb the public peace, or obstruct others in their religious worship. Benjamin Franklin - 1787 - Motion for Prayers in the Constitutional Convention, "And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? or do we imagine we no longer need its assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time; and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this Truth, that God governs in the Affairs of Men. And if a Sparrow cannot fall to the Ground without his Notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without his Aid?"; Reference: Franklin Collected Works, Lemay, ed., 1138.

Sorry, mispelled Deists in the question.

pip - you must be of the reformed Deist denomination. Tradtionally, Deism would imply that God does not have a strong personal relationship with YOU! There is no need to pray.

This is a topic that people are going to get confused with however the answer is simple.

Our founding fathers were CHRISTIANS. The reason that they John Adams said that people should be able to worship god in their own way is a simple way of saying, whether you are Protestant, Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, or Episcopal. You have a right to view and think of god how you want.

IT ALSO SAYS THAT YOU SHOULD NOT PERSECUTE PEOPLE BECAUSE OF THEIR BELIEFS.

Which we do now against Christianity. Which is basically rebelling against the founding principles of this nation.

Sad isn't it, and I am not even a religious person.

Being a deist doesn't mean you can't have a close relationship with God. It just means you have a different relationship than a Christian would.

Actually you are incorrect. But it is a common misconception. Many deists did and do have the relationship you mentioned. But Plenty believed that God "could" intervene in the world if he chose and as such they believed he did on occasion in the form of "miracles".

Isaac Newton claimed to be a deist and even believed in Jesus.

Believe me, I've most likely studied this a lot more than you.

Because they were spiritual people who where wise enough to know that in order to protect their right to worship freely, religion and government must be forever separated.
