rebuilding the carb is actually fairly easy - as one of the other people who replied said, you can get the kits, most of those kits have step by step instructions with them on how to clean them.

You'll need at least 2 cans of the spray carb cleaner - remember, you want to clean the heck outta those smaller parts.

I'd take this time to also do a complete tune up - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil change, PVC valve, and a NEW air filter. Even if you just replaced your air filter, you'll want a new one on that fresh carb of yours.

If there's too much gunk in the small holes/bores in the carb you may need to have it professionally rebuilt by a shop that can "dip" the carb in a carb cleaning solution in an ultrasonic parts washer.

You can always tune up the truck (skipping the carb work) and just get an aftermarket (or stock rebuilt/remanufactured) carburetor, and save the hassle.

Here's a big tip - make sure you've got something like an old egg carton - to hold your small parts, and to help keep them separated - it helps to organize them, and is extremely helpful when putting everything back together. And don't forget to stuff a big rag in/over the intake manifold while the carb is off, dropping a nut, washer, bolt screw or anything down there can cause TONS of damage.

This is the absolute best way to do it. Find a Mercury boat store and buy a product called,"Power Tune" also buy a can of Gum-out spray. With the engine running, use the nozzle on the PT spray to inject cleaner in all crevices. where the metering rods are, down the back where the secondaries are, where the primaries are, You'll be amzed as the PT physically floats out the filth built up in the carb and burns it out the tailpipe. Also inject it into the breather tubes leading to the float. After you done, follow up with the Gum-out to remove the debris that the PT has loosened. This process will nearly re-build the carb as you watch it!!!! Watch your MPG's rise. When your done, change your plugs with Bosch Platinum single- points. E-mail me with the results. Good Luck!!!

Assuming it's a very old Chevrolet with a 350 engine that even has one, yes, it could be.

It could also be an electrical problem, a fuel problem, such as a bad fuel pump of dirty filter, or any one of a number of possibilities.

Instead of guessing, why not take it to your mechanic, and say "Hey (insert his name here), my truck isn't running right and shuts off sometimes. Can you take a look?"

depends on what carb it has on it...there are too many possibilities to guess

84's had a ton of problems with the carb..
it probably needs a rebuild kit..
but first you need to rule out a vacuum leak..
that is a common problem on 84's

If you think that the carburetor is dirty you can try and first run a very good fuel additive in the gas tank and replace the fuel filter and see if that will help.

If the carburetor is very dirty then its best to have an independent shop remove and rebuild it for you because it is somewhat complicated to do if you have never done it.

Good Luck

Wow you have a carb? Was the truck built before you were born?
