I thought that when they took over the House and Senate they were going to get things done?

Aren't they unified? Or are they divided?

Short answer: NO ONE can accomplish anything.

Long answer: The Democratic Party has been severely fragmented since the Vietnam War. It is far less unified than the Republican Party, and therefore it is more difficult to get Democrats to agree on anything. Plus, everyone is so concerned with staying on the moderates' and swing voters' good side that they really can't make any progress.

P.S. I'm an independent, not a Dem. or Repub., so this isn't meant to be biased in any way.

So far, the inability to close debate in the Senate without Republican votes is blocking a lot of efforts. That takes 60 votes, which requires considerable Republican support.

Even if they manage to pass a bill in both the House and Senate, the President is willing to veto bills and then publicly blame Congress for not having passed them. And it would take a two-thirds vote in each house to override a veto.

This puts both houses in an ugly, detail-driven game of compromising to try to get something done. Democrats have a more difficult time with that than Republicans, simply because Republicans are far more willing to block Congress from accomplishing anything at all on some major concerns.

I believe most of the divisions among Democrats are more about the tactics in this situation than they are about what they would like to accomplish.

they have tried, they have a very slim margin, even when the rep and dems agree on something, child care, then the big bully pres. bush vetos it just to show them. They try but the rep will disagree even if they agree just to be a bully rep. I have found that the rep. beleive it is either all our way or no way. If you say i am a conservative christian republican, you can get away with anything, rape, murder, lieing to the congress, embezzlement, anything, they have all done it.

They are getting things done for the wealthy only! End representative government legally under our constitution! Replace with a true direct consensus democracy that can be verified & validated! Electronical & manually! Of/by/for the legal citizen majority! http://www.grinningplanet.com/2004/11-11/direct-democracy-plutocracy-article.htm

Because the republican congress keeps them from getting the needed 60% to pass a bill, then the decider "vetos" it anyway. Pay attention, read the newspapers watch all the news channels not just Fox.

What about the Republicans?
No exit strategy for Iraq.
Missing money in Iraq.
Displaced residents of New OrLeans while the city is still in ruins.
Missing Osama bin Laden.
I can go on and on and on...
