Ventilation for stinky things like clothes, or old forgotten lunches. I know my brothers school recently invested in lockers without vents and the police department said they wouldn't bring the dogs in sniffing for drugs anymore because it would be to hard and confusing for them!!! So they had to get lockers with vent! Besides, how else would you squeeze lunch condiments into your archnemesis' locker?

Without vents, the lockers would begin to smell terrible. Even a book sitting in a sealed locker for a long time begins to smell musty.

I wonder that, too, especially when considering the fact that someone could insert something really foul through the slots. Regardless, the towel, gym clothes, swimsuit, washcloth, etc., needs to dry and not grow mold. The whole idea seems to be a spot to store gym items during the week - then take them home on weekends for a good washing! Yeah, right....

Lockers hold wet coats, gym shoes, sweaty clothes from P.E. class. If there weren't vents for air circulation, the odor would knock you down!

Good question.

Could it be for safety?

If a person was to lock another person inside the locker, they would not last long without vents.

because if a child is locked inside a locker, then they can breathe. Lot of kids lock other kids in lockers.

To make sure those gym clothes don't make your locker smell for an eternity.

Clothes might stink up the locker otherwise...they need to breathe.

and by the way, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

If you put things in there that have natural moisture in them, or something that smells bad, it would make for a really nasty, damp, sweaty locker. It would promote bacteria growth.
