I'm afraid this question needs more context/background! Where were the writers in question based? it says they are expatriates...
Without all the info, I can only guess and say a) as WW1 had a massive effect on the whole world, but really need more info!

I would argue that A lead to D, and A is the right answer. WWI was different than other wars because of the technologies employed in WWI to kill massive numbers of people and the geographic scope of the war. The impasses in the trenches lead many people to become disallusioned with nations and God. I would say this meaninglessness and alienation lead to intellectuals living as expatriates and looking for another kind of meaning.
