Meaning were they friends?

South Carolina was not one of the wealthier colonies, it had some wealth, but it wasn't as big as Virginia or some of the others.

Seeing that most of the slaves that were owned were single slaves belonging to a family (as in most slave owners only owned one slave) and that they were often working, eating, and living with the family that owned them...

I would say that the relationship between them could have been fairly close at times. Yes, there were times they were not, but there were times they were.
