The English Puritans established some of the first colonies there. The "Pilgrims" in 1620 at Plymouth and the other Puritans in 1630 near present day Boston. So there are actually two answers--1. The English and 2. The Puritans. Officially it was an English proprietary (maybe royal) colony.

Both were Puritan, the "Pilgrims" were more radical and considered separatists, while the other Puritan colonies wanted to "purify" the Anglican Church, but could not do that in England, so they went to America.
