Why did michael bloomberg become a republican?

Just prior to running for mayor in 2001 he went from a lifelong democrat to a republican. What was his motive?

To get elected. He does not have a conservative bone in his body. He is a calculating business man. He did not want to run against the Democrat in the primary.
