It should have been sold "as is". Did they use the furniture? Did they test the expresso machine? 4 months is a long time to decide that the items were not what they thought. Doubt they will get much, if anything.

When sold did the receipt or Bill of sale state "As is" since the equipment was used? If so, you have a case.

If not, is will be ify. It depends on the circumstances that the equipment is not functioning. If they can prove that not only had the equipment not worked from day one. They will have to have tried to contact you and given you ample opportunity to make right on the deal. Either to pay for repairs or to replace the equipment, etc.
You need to find out the limitations regarding "private party sales" and go from there.

Most restaurant equipment dealers have tons of used equipment because restaurants go out of business all the time.

Most new places probably have used equipment form day one when they open.

Tell them to take the machine to the local restaurant equipment dealer, and they will find out what the market will bear.

Beyond that, classified ads or ebay are their next best bet - plenty of people will want a used machine, just as they did. If they eliminate the middleman, then they can get the "used retail price" for themselves.
