I was so proud of my team the Brewers for not having any cheaters and now they just signed a huge contract with Eric Gagne ( one of the steroid freaks ) . Shouldn't they be able to cancel the contract to keep the team clean and honest ?
If everyone dumped the cheats MLB would be cleaned up in a heartbeat .

Even if a player stopped using steroids the early use inflated his stats so he could get a larger contract and that's cheating the team that signs him if he doesn't disclose that his stats are tainted .

I think that's an excellent idea. Also banned for life. And no one who's playing juiced should ever even be considered for the Hall of Fame.

I say: stop molly-coddling these arrogant, self-righteous crybabies and let them WORK for a living like ordinary folk.

The MLBPA wouldn't allow the team to just cancel the contract. The player's union would file lawsuit after lawsuit if a team tried to cancel the contract of a player involved in the Mitchell report. Most of what is in the Mitchell Report comes from the testimony of a small group of trainers and there really isn't much hard evidence against the players anyway. The Mitchell report shows that someone gave Gagne the steroids or he purchased the steroids. In order to terminate the contract, which would still be a stretch, they have to show that he knowingly used them and is still using them when he signed the contract.

I think it would depend on when he was/is using. Steroids were banned in, what, 2003 or so? If it was before that, MLB can't do a thing because he didn't do anything illegel, right? Now if was after that, completely different story. Not sure if MLB has a specific rule about cancelling contracts. Maybe there are clauses in the individual player contracts?

A contract can be revoked, but it is so much effort and so little monetary savings that it almost isn't worth the trouble. It takes a committed, principled stand by the front office or ownership, usually accompanied by a large check. The only one I can think of in the past 25 years (at least) was the Rockies getting out of their deal with Denny Neagle after he had (a) sucked on the mound (predictable, given the type of pitcher he was, in Coors Field pre-humidor) and (b) got busted with a hooker. Even WITH cause, it took about a year and Neagle still got a lot of the money still due in the deal.

Only unless there is a specific clause in their contracts saying so (if drug use is suspected or confirmed). At that time, the player can have their contract made null & void. If they have no such clause, they can get suspended.

Yes, there are conditions for cancelling a contract and part of it is for immoral conduct in or outside of baseball.
