It begins with chemicals which reinforce the emotion.
I researched, because I found this an interesting topic. This is what I learned:
Stage 1 Lust - testosterone and estrogen prominent - gets you looking and hunting.
Stage 2 Attraction - neuro-transmitters called 'monoamines' play an important role: Dopamine - Also activated by cocaine and nicotine; Norepinephrine - Otherwise known as adrenalin. Starts us sweating and gets the heart racing; and
Serotonin - One of love's most important chemicals and one that may actually send us temporarily insane.
Stage 3 Attachment - Oxytocin - This is released by the hypothalamus gland during child birth and also helps the breast express milk. It helps cement the strong bond between mother and child. It is also released by both sexes during orgasm and it is thought that it promotes bonding when adults are intimate. The theory goes that the more sex a couple has, the deeper their bond becomes. Vasopressin - Another important chemical in the long-term commitment stage.
Fascinating, don't ya think?

Love is not a chemical reaction.. the chemical reaction is called sexual attraction. Love is more of a concept , a belief that it will be the answer to all your problems. For a woman at least , there can be love without there being attraction, sometimes the idea of love is so addictive that she can give up all just to feel that love. Lofty? Definitely... women idealize love, most of the time wrongly I might add, with unrealistic visions of happily ever afters.

If you stand the test of time, love can be developed more deeply. Familiarity with your partner might fool you into thinking it's some metaphysical phenomena, however, love in it's beginning stages, especially, is largely due to pheromones, hence the chemical reaction.

If it's a chemical reaction, DuPont would have caught on to this a long time ago, and they would be the major company for dating websites.

If it were only a chemical reaction, then it wouldn't last longer than the reaction.

The question creates a false dichotomy. Love - especially romantic love - is both of these things and more.

Love is a decision. When you decide to put another person's welfare ahead of yours, that is love. Therefore, love is the other first.
