I honestly have no idea what the NFL's policy is on this issue. Do they do testing? If so, why not? Those guys are freaking HUGE, I'd think it would be ripe pickings so to speak. If they do, how often?

Hopefully this is tightly controlled; so much so that it's just assumed and that's why I never hear about it in the media.

The NFL subjects its players to year-round testing, including the offseason - they can be tested up to six times in the offseason alone. They also maintain a lengthy list of banned substances, and they keep the positive test threshold close to that used by the IOC for most substances.

There has been question, though, about the validity of their testing, and several players seem to have slipped through the cracks despite pretty strong evidence (prescriptions, syringes, etc.) against them.

The NFL has been way ahead of baseball on this, though, taking action about a decade before MLB. They've been able, then, to control things in-house, and have avoided the prying eyes of Congress.

They do frequent randomized urine testing (I believe they test players 4 times a year, but that could be wrong). They don't do blood testing.

The punishment for the first failed test is a 4 game suspension. The second failed test gets you a 1-year suspension, and I think the third one gets you kicked out of the NFL.

This is from memory, so I could be wrong about the frequency of the urine testing and the punishment for the third offense.

The NFL's drug testing policy (while still flawed) is far superior and more comprehensive than that in MLB. The NFLPA has been far less resistant to testing that the MLBPA. Again, this doesn't mean that guys in the NFL aren't juicing up, but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.

they should be testing them for crisco. some of those guys are huge because they're fat as hell. not that i advocate steroid use, but in baseball, i think it requires more strength to actually hit the crap out of a ball and run like you're on fire to score some points. football is so anaerobic, i don't think you need to dope yourself since you're only required to do so much in an extremely short time span. but either way, both sports are boring as hell. i'll take basketball any day.
