What is the purpose of a plotter head?

I have a HP Designjet 500 and we had to change the plotter head this morning. It looks like a smaller ink cartridge... Can anyone tell me what exactly it does? Is it a filter for the ink before it hits the paper? Thanks!

The plotter head controls the ink flow. It is what determines how the ink is distributed on the paper.
