Every decade is worse than the one before it. I don't know that I'd go so far as to blame the hippies for the gangstas...it's just not safe anywhere, any more.

Social changes follow their own pattern and are indirectly linked with the over all changes a society under goes. With rapid technological changes and globalization in the last two decades, value systems of societies has also undergone changes in proportion to the over all rate of change experienced by them.Value system face greater resistance to change as social acceptance is always slower than for other changes.Rapid?Well,it's a matter of perception an older generation thinks that values are changing fast( and for the worst) and youngers think it's awefully slow.

No, because our values are quite ingrained and do not change rapidly.
What history tells us is that there will always be conflicts in values between different generations and different groups. So the perspective and values are always conflicting between the younger and the older people, liberals and conservatives, religious and irreligious, etc.
These clashes in values will continue, but the values of most of the members will not change much. It is the nature of humans that once their values become entrenched, they will defend theirs as the best and protest that others values are the worst (or nearly so). Thus, their values become even more inflexible.
Look at what happened to the values of the "hippy generation" of the 1960's. That "value revolution" did not change the values of our larger society in a permanent way. It just led to a further polarization between liberals and conservatives.
Our values as a society seem always to be in a state of re-balancing. When society becomes liberal, it is followed by a conservative rebellion, and vise versa. One era is balanced by the next era. Society seeks an equilibrium.
