Contractor has an obligation to perform the work promised. He is bonded and insured to protect the homeowner from losses due to theft of damage done by the contractor. Any and ALL property within the home is protected. This contractor has no legal standing to claim the found items. As a homeowner, a "reward" would be in order but the homeowner is not obligated to turn over any property to the contractor.
Even if it was in the walls prior to the current owner, the house and ALL IT'S CONTENTS were sold to the new owner. Whoever put the money in the walls and left it there hasn't missed the money for how long? Now that it's public news though, you will see roaches crawling out of the woodwork to lay a claim to the money.
Sorry, "finders keepers" is a childish kids game, doesn't work here because we aren't talking about toys. Homeowner didn't know it was there, he also doesn't know how many socks are lost behind his washer and dryer. Let the contractor have them!

I read this earlier this morning and was, as usual, a little astonished at the simple greed shown by all of these people. Obviously, if the money was found in the walls of the house, it didn't belong to ANY of them. Why not try to find the actual owner, or descendant of the owner? Guess that would take money, and they'd have to part with something NONE of them has a right to.

Well it's a kinda finders keepers thing. However it is on someone elses property, so they should do the right thing and go 50/50 and stop letting the Devil (greed) get the better of them.

The Right thing to do is locate Peter Dunnes relatives and give it to them. The rest is needless suffering..".Any time you are rationalizing you are making the wrong choice".

it doesn't matter who found it, it was in part of the womans property, it belongs to her, if i come to your house and find a diamond , it doesn't mean that it belongs to me,it's your diamond.
