Its probably neither one. If you didn't disconnect the battery then the power was drained by the radio and other electronics that still draw a bit of power. The ford escort should have enough power to jump it, it might just take some time for the ranger battery to charge up sufficiently to start the motor. After you get the Ranger started let it run for atleast 20 mins before shutting it off. If the battery and alternator are good, then it should be charged up.

If it hasn't been driven for over 2 months it could very well be the battery. Small electronics like the clock can still drain the battery especially if it's an older battery. It's not good to keep a car idle for a long period of time.
The size and model of a car doesn't matter much when you jump start it.
I think a new battery is needed.

Your battery is still to weak. A starter on a v6 requires about 110 amps of current. If you left a batter sit for that period of time with the batter leads still connected to the car...I am not surprised. For future reference i would just disconnected the negative lead from the battery. This will prevent this problem in the future.. In regards to the battery. If you dont want to overwork your alternator. I would take a day to DRIP Charge (1-2amps) the battery. Any battery will take and hold a charge better when you slow charge it VS a fast charge. Check the water in the battery to make sure that it's above the plates. If you just try to jump the vehicle and have the alternator charge you can over work it and burn it out.

If you left is sitting for 2 months then the battery drained from things like clocks, etc. (and just sitting).
You can just the car using small car (like an Escort) but you need to connect the jumper wire and leave it connected for some time because the Escort battery is not big enough. So you would be using the Escort like a battery charger (instead of a jumper).

Depending on the age of the dead battery, it may or may not be permenantly dead. Leaving the battery dead makes the internal surfaces calcified (hardened) to the point of no return. But I have recently revived my dead battery (1.5 months sitting) with a charger. But it took something like 3 hours of charging.
Good Luck.

a battery that dead for that long may b junk...when jumping have the jump car race engine 2500 rpm for 10 min before turning key...if ur bat has anything it will start.... just hooking up cables gives 12 v but no amps.... really best to take bat and test and slow charge.

Depending on how old your batt. is, it looks like it might be time to get a replacement. Pop off the batt. filler caps and see what the level of fluid is, if low add dist. water to bring the levels up on each hole. When a batt. is in a slow state of charge a jump will do you no good. It has to be charged back up with a batt. charger.
