The closest Jo-anne's is in San Antonio or Corpus Christi, more than 2 hours away. And I looked at the Michael's site; does not seem to offer anything either.

Yarn shops and craft stores usually offer classes and/or know who does. This one doesn't currently have any sewing or knitting classes—try asking if they know of any:
Michaels Arts & Crafts
Las Tiendas Plaza
571 E. Morrison Rd.
Brownsville TX 78526-3370
(956) 350-6205
http://www.michaels.com

You're better off asking locally rather than on an international website like this one. For example, post in the Community section of your local Craigslist: http://brownsville.craigslist.org/ or in the Texas forum at Craftster: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=49.0

The members of my local knitting group love teaching "newbies." There are no knitting Meetups anywhere near you, and the "Sewing Sisters" Meetup is all the way in Weslaco, TX: http://quilting.meetup.com/227

Well, I'm in California... but a quick web-search to find the Brownsville, Tx Park and Recreation website ( http://parks.cob.us/recreation.asp ) sadly shows no classes.

A check of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce's website ( http://www.brownsvillechamber.com/ ) shows nothing either in their directory.

Here however is a link that might help: http://knitting.meetup.com/cities/us/tx/brownsville/

GOOD LUCK !!
