Depends on the game. For laptops the 8600M is about as good a mainstream card as you're going to find. With that said it's basically a stripped down version of the desktop 8600. Having DDR2 video RAM isn't going to help. You could probably play less demanding games like WoW quite well. But the more demanding games, like COD4 or Crysis will not run well at all. If you want a good gaming laptop you'll have to pony up about $4k USD and getting something with a 8800-based card or SLI' d video cards. Keep in mind battery life with any gaming laptop will be poor, 60 minutes is about the best you can hope for, although most of the time it's less than that.

I'm using the Dell Inspiron 1520 with 8600M GT.
It performs well, but not perfect.
For example, we talking bout Need For Speed.
It can performs almost perfect in the NFS Most Wanted and NFS Carbon. But in the NFS Prostreet, if you set the the graphics to the highest point, it'll cause the game lag.
I'll give this display card a "Great".

It's a decent card. It should work fine for most games. Don't buy the extreme ultimate top of the line... they're not worth it unless you have a ton of money or are on the cutting edge of gaming.
As to buying a dell laptop, I'd recommend against it. Their LCDs are not very good, and that's important when you're talking about quality visuals. Try ASUS or HP.

never expect dell or any of the regular production p/c builders to use a high end video card on a production p/c. you might be able to custom order a p/c with high end video and extra ram from them but expect to pay as much or more than if you buy and install the high end video card yourself, also remember those upper end video cards require top of the line power supplys as well.
