Gold plated engraved guns?

Question

I want to engrave and gold plate a desert eagle.

I don't want to just put it up on my wall though, I actually want to take it to shooting ranges and carry it around with me for personal protection.

With excessive use will the engravings or the gold plating get damaged or worn? Is their a way to fight against this such as using a jewelery cloth on the gun every morning?

Yes eventually it will wear down as will your pride from all of the people laughing at you for such a stupid idea.
