Monday - moon
Wednesday, Odin's Day ä Norse God
Thursday - Thor's Day - Norse God
Friday - Freya's Day - Norse Goddess -wife of Odin
Saturday - Saturn? A planet
Sunday - Dedicated to the Sun.
Tuesday? Apparently named after a Teutonic God, (tysdagr - old Norse) something like Mars the God of war, which is why the French call Tuesday Mardi - well that's what the OED says!

They are named after gods and goddesses.
Monday = Moon Day =
Tuesday = Tiw's Day (the Germanic God Tiw, syncretized to the Roman god Mars, think the French word for Tuesday, Mardi)
Wednesday = Woden's Day (the Germanic God Odin/Woden, syncretized to the Roman god Mercury, think the French word for Wednesday, Mercredi)
Thursday = Thor's Day (the Germanic God Thor, syncretized to the Roman god Jupiter or Jove, think the French word for Thursday, Jeudi)
Friday = Frigg's Day (the Germanic Goddess Frigg, syncretized to the Roman goddess Venus, think the French word for Friday, Vendredi)
Saturday = Saturn's Day (the Roman God Saturn)
Sunday = Sun's Day

They are named after things worshiped by some cultures.
Thursday - Thor's day
Friday -Freya's day
etc. I'm not up too much on Norse Deities.
At least one month (and I think more as well) is named after a Roman ruler.
August - Augustus

The days get their names from the original germanic names. Heathen Europe refused to let go of them. They are in order,.....Solisdag, Mannisdag,Tyrsdag,Wodensdag,Thursdag,Friggisdag,and Satirsdag. The names are suns day, moons day, Tyrs day after the norse god ,Woden's day ditto, Thor's day ditto, Friggs day a pagan goddess, and Satirs day.

Just to add to what people have already said - different cultures use different systems - based either on old Germanic/Scandanavian gods or on Romans -
In French Wednesday is "Mecredi" - Mercury - Thursday is "Jeudi"- Jupiter and Friday is "Vendredi" - Venus........
Some countries just use what translates as 1st day, 2nd day etc......
Wednesday in German is "Midwok" - no points for guessing that one.....................
