My two teens are asking for "ipods" for christmas. I went shopping yesterday, and wound up buying two Zunes, due to information from the salesperson that Ipods must go thru Itunes, even to copy a song from your computer to the Ipod. He mentioned that Microsoft Zune can download songs from Limewire, rip songs right from your computer files. that it was less complicated to use than the Ipod. I'm debating whether to exchange the Zunes for Ipods (same exact price). I'm new to the MP3 game. Which one do you think is better for a 15 year old? Also, I've heard that many computer viruses have been transferred thru LimeWire. I'm aware that it's a file sharing program. Will my antivirus software protect my computer from virus associated with LimeWire downloads? Thanks for any advice for this MP3 newbie.

I have a Zune 80gb, and I love it. (im 15 too.) I never really liked Apple and their Ipods. I just dont. My friend got herIpod about 6 months ago, and it just "froze to death" this past weekend.
As far as limewire goes, that same friend started using limewire a couple of weeks ago. =\ i dont know if that has anything to do with her Ipods death, or what. I would be careful about that though. But limewire can work with itunes too. You just have to fix the importing preferences.

ps: i would be careful about limewire if i were you. I wouldnt want to be paying the $200 fine! As the article says, Limewire itself isn't illegal, but downloading music off their program IS. So it would be your fault if someone caught you downloading their music. Not Limewires.

Trust me, they wanted the iPods!!
If I asked my parents for an iPod, and got a zune I would be pissed off, but maybe that's just me.

iTunes is a library where all the music is stored. It is compatible with Macs, Windows XP, etc.

Limewire is compatible with both iPod, and Zune, but iTunes is only compatible with the iPod=] Limewire is actually illegal, since it is free downloading, while iTunes costs money to download.

If you still want to download from Limewire though, all you have to do is "enque" the songs you want, save them in a music folder, than import them into your iTunes library.

Limewire is more prone to viruses, while iTunes has none. If you really want to buy from iTunes there are 2 ways to buy; one, you can put your credit card information, and then you can buy songs which will later be charged to your credit card. OR, my preferred option is buying "prepaid cards", available in lots of places (shopper's drug mart, radio shack, walmart, some grocery stores, etc.) The prepaid cards have a code at the back, which you scratch, and then can redeem for monetary value on your computer.

I would say this:

Trade the Zunes for the iPods, UNLESS you are buying them iPod shuffles (the one with no screen), then stick with the Zunes. But the iPod nano is better than the Zune (just my opinion).

I am a 15 year old girl, by the way :)
Good luck!

I have a Zune and I love it but a lot of people especially teens like the ipod for trend reasons. I use Zune soft ware and Ipod software when I sync music for my friends ipod and they both are generally easy to use. You need both Zune spoftware to sync a Zune and Itunes software to sync an ipod. You can get songs from Limewire to work on both (you will need to invest in a good antivirus ) or try another program but be careful because most are illegal to use.

I like my Zune(30 GB) because it has a radio which Ipod doesn't , its a little different, and you can put your own pictures to make a nice background. They also have these new background skins. Zune is great but teens (girls) tend to love the slimmer ipod so that should be your choice.

in all honesty, do your kids really need that freedom with a zune?
i mean, are they kids that know a lot of music, or just what's on the radio.

because the zune IS really nice, i'd like one myself.
it just depends on the musical preference of your kids, i suppose.
with iTunes you can limit the amount of money they spend buying songs.

but limewire isn't always trustworthy.
i tried downloading a song with the title correct, but it was something about grandfathers.
plus, limewire is a tad illegal, so i dont know why the salesperson was telling you to use it.
(even with an iPod, you can send songs you download from limewire to iTunes. i do that).

as for the virus stuff, my friend who's had limewire said it completely ate away at her iTunes and she lost all of her purchased music. i'm positive it does give the computer viruses, but if you have SpySweeper or Norton Anti-Virus and run them a lot you should be fine.

again, for a 15 year old, it just depends on what they'd be putting on it.
iTunes is good for uploading CDs and such, i find that it comes in handy a lot, and it's very organized.
i think the iPod would be better, to be honest.

#1. It is not true that ipods can only add music through iTunes, there are several ways you can add music, including WiFi Music Store, direct transfer from Hard disk.

#2. The best part is, iTunes automatically imports all the songs from Limewire without your kids having to do anything.

#3. Like I said, if they prefer not to use iTunes they can go to My Computer and access the music, video, directly on their iPods.

#4. Apple products have that cool factor and die hard customer support for their products. If possible return the product and order it from Apple store online, you can get gift wrapped and engraving done on the back of iPod at no extra cost.

#5. Just the choice of accessories availible for iPods, including fancy cases, chargers, docks, stereo, FM transmitters shows you which mp3 player is more coveted.

I have a 22 month old friend, she uses my iPhone, uses youtube and watches High School Musical on there. It is so intutive and easy to ease.

Let's all agree Microsoft doesn't have a clue how to design products that are customer friendly or user friendly.

I have been in the IT industry for over a decade and we support all different kinds of servers form MS, Apple, and more.

Hardware design, Software design from Apple is simple amazing.

I got my Ipod for my 16th birthday. I love it. It's very easy to use and you dont have to worry about getting in trouble with "stealing songs". When I asked for an Ipod I wanted only an Ipod so yeah. Either way I'm sure they'll love them. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! =]
