Why say the same thing over, and over, and over, when you can say it one time really well. I take a lot of time with my Christmas letter so that it is happy, informative, and entertaining. Consequently, I don't feel bad sending it. I always leave room for a quick personal note at the bottom for each person. I think that is the best of both worlds.

Oh, I don't know that they are sooo generic! When there are more than one or two people to write to at the same time, wouldn't much of it be repetition...in different words anyway? I think this way more about what's been going on and plans and such can be written. The letter is more informative and all friends and family you choose to share it with will enjoy it. You can always add a little note here and there if you want. Years ago, Christmas cards were simply greetings. They were not meant to be letters. Just, thinking of you, notes. The advent of the home printer has brought us a long way in communication. God Bless and Merry Christmas!

I think you answered your own question: some people do not have time to write personalized letters. However, they still want to show everyone that they are thinking about them, hence the "generic" Christmas letters. Generic or personalized, it is all about demonstrating your love for people by showing you are thinking about them and are willing to make an effort to do so. There are a lot of lonely people out there who need affirmation that you care about them. At the very least, make time to send a card! Otherwise you might find yourself the lonely one in some future Christmas.

You answered your own question, time!! I send just cards. Most people are so busy doing other things just to even sit and do the letter is hard to get done. So yeah go ahead and copy that bugger and send, my only advice put their name in at top and sign each letter.

I am one of "those" people. I do it to provide some "facts" about my year and update on my family. Quick way to "list" places visited, shows seen..plus stats on family. I always include ages (the accountant in me). Avoids that constant question, "How old is your cat?" My thought is the recipient can read it or not...but I did my job....

Sending something pictorially of what you could just pen down would be more effective and welcoming. That is why.
