There's always been those sort of laws but they vary from state to state. Usually its a case where you are supposed to put it in the newspaper that you found it, for ex "undisclosed amount of money found in wall in west part of town, call to identify" or something. Then if nobody responds in 2 weeks or whatever the law states than you can keep it.

So that lady with the diamond should've turned it in, waited, then pawned it. Or she should've gone to a jewelry shop. You pawn diamonds you're just gonna get ripped off. :P

I saw this story on the news, thought about it a lot. I agree with you. When the homeowner purchased the home, it would seem logical to me that said homeowner is the rightful owner of whatever is on the property. IMO, the property owner was generous to give a finder's fee of 10% to the contractor that found the money. Granted, homeowner wouldn't have known about the cash had it not been for the contractor. However, I believe the homeowner is the rightful owner of the money.

I believe you have to report what ever you found, and they have 30-90 days to claim it, laws may very state to state. If you were to find a large sum of cash and take it, you would be fine as long as you cleaned all the money and wipe the finger prints off. In the case of the woman finding the diamond ring, she shouldn't have sold it. She should have just kept it had home, wiped finger prints off, and wait at least five years or before the statue of limitations are up before selling it.

i think and I have been wrong , you turn it into law enforcement if no one can claims it .. in example say exactly how much money there was and what types of bills it was like fifty one hundreds dollar bills .. 3000 20 dollars bills etc . in 30 days they return it to you, but ethically you should turn it in and give the rightful owner a legitimate chance to claim it. When you take something to a Pawn shop you sign a piece of paper saying that the object belongs to you outright and legally

Open to interpertation and that's what this is all about.....but I agree with you; Only difference is that apparently the homeowner didn't actually "Own" the money either.

I'l try and find the rightful owner and if not available, split it between the 2; found money after all

If this contractor gets the 40% he wants, then in the future, anything found on your property will be split this way. If I am digging for a watermain on your property and strike gold or oil, do I now own 40% of the rights to it? You are paying me to be there and if you decide to share the wealth, fine, but it is your property and so is anything found there.

According to Carl Winslow, one has 2 weeks after printing a "found" notice in the local newspaper.

I was playing in a slot machine at the casino and found a rectangular thick-shaped wallet. I discovered it under where I had put my handbag, in between the row of slot machines where my accompanying friend was playing. Then, thinking it was my friend's wallet that was left there under, I put it into my handbag. Afterall, my friend was coming home with me. As well I was curious to know whether my friend was telling the truth when she told me that the money she in-cashed from the machine was actually her last money, I took the liberty to take it with me in my handbag into the washroom as I was going to pee. When I was in the toilet-room and opened the wallet, I realized that it was not my friend's because it was just full of cards and had somebody else' driver's license. I just closed the wallet and I said to my self " Ohh, **** !!! I will have nothing to do with this ! ". I just zipped it fast and thought that taking it with me out of the washroom to report it to secuirty would just have them to interrogate me and maybe accuse me of taking something out of the wallet. So, I decided to just leave it there in the toilet room with the door open-wide as I was hoping a toilet cleaner or others would report it to the security instead. I didn't report it at first to the Lost and Found section of the Casino because I really did think it was my friend's who was playing around that row of slot machines. Anyway, I am confident about being proven right because of all of the cameras in the casino will have recorded me finding the wallet where I said I did.. So, when I was found ans asked about the wallet I had found I told them straight that I just left it instead in the toilet as I panicked that it wasn't actually my friend's I thought it was. I cooperated and showed them my handbag to prove that I didn't have anything from the wallet in my bag. I really did leave it there in the toilet room's toilet-paper holder. The security staff can see through the recordings from their cameras that I didn't go anywhere else outside the casino. The only time I went out of the gambling hall was when I was called to answer some questions by the Police as the casino security people called them. I was not scared of course as I know and they know that I had nothing to hide. I am just so upset to think that the Casino handled me a bit roughly when they took me and my friend out and told me that I could not got back inside. I was not allowed to play more and hope to get some of my money back or even maybe win some. My friend and I play there regularly and normally loose a fair bit of money. We are Gold Members in this Casino's loyalty program. They told me that I have to wait for a letter from them or a call telling me how long I would be banned from the casino. They have to review the incident first then make the decision. Isn't this damaging to my reputation ?? I suppose they owe me an apology to that because I have done nothing wrong, I am clean. Somebody had lost the wallet first. All I did was to find it. It was returned by somebody else because when I saw that it wasn't my friend's, I didn't want to have anything to do with it at all. I stand by my decision not to be the one to report it for the fear of an ugly interrogation and the possible accusation of taking whatever may have already vanished from it. I guess it was right not to keep that wallet in my handbag for long. The owner should be thankfull that they did eventually get theri wallet back and they don't have to go through the headache of getting their cards replaced. Too bad they seemed to be more concerned and unhappy that some money seemed to be missing from the wallet. I do not know if this money was actually in the wallet when it got lost and, if it was there, who has it now. I know that I never toched or even saw the money.
