I've tried that same mouse with my girlfriend's pc and it works perfectly fine. But when i plug it in my pc, it requires a disc. There isn't one in the box.

Go online and get the driver. (Google the brand, and "free driver")

You should restart the PC after you have it pluged in. That usualy resets the computers driver, and looks for new software.

Look at the brand. If it requires a program (which is probably installed in your girl's computer) that's not in your computer, just go to website of whatever brand your mouse is and they should have it there. I lost the CD for my scanner once and that's exactly what I did.

If it doesn't work, try to switch the plugs around (if it's USB-port compatible) and that should do the trick.

You need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Boot up some liveCD such as Slax or Knoppix, get X up and running, and have a look at the input devices section in the xorg.conf that gets generated. Write down what protocol it is using. Then reboot from your hard disk. Press ctrl+alt+f1 for a text mode console and login as root (On Ubuntu and other distributions without direct root access, you will have to login as yourself, then type
$ sudo sh
to get a root shell.)

Then
# nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
(Or you could use vi, if you know how .....)
