i tried the top two asweres but none of them worked

I HAVE MAC OSX

1) Type the text in normally.
2) Select the text to be in superscript (in this case, the "2")
3) Press SHIFT - CTRL - = (equal sign). (You can also make text subscript as in for example chemical formulas. For that, use CTRL - =.)

The keyboard shortcut is much faster than the alternative method via the Format -> Font... menu.

Hold down Alt and then type 0 1 7 8 on the number pad and leave up Alt again and the ² will appear. This works in any Microsoft application.

Others are:
ALT + 0179 = ³
ALT + 0176 = °
ALT + 0181 = µ
ALT + 0216 = Ø

I use the menu;
Insert - special characters - symbols
and I pick it out of the menu.

I also recently found out I can use Alt-v

However, I also know that it changes with different versions and different operating system (the above is for Word 98 on an iMac with OS X).

I found it by hinting around on a day when I was not in a hurry.

Write 2 after the number you want to square. Select this 2, go to fonts and click superscribed.

Select the number and then in Format - Font select a check-box called superscript.
