Excellent question. We could argue that most crime has its roots in some kind of hatred or at least anger. However, the intent of the law is to bring to justice those cases based on overt prejudice against someone based on race, religion, gender, etc. It suggests that we are more prejudiced than we should be and that we need to control how this prejudice is acted on.
It's not the thought process that's being criminalized, but the actions that one should be able to control.

Hate crimes have been going on since man walked the earth. They were put in different categories. A hate crime is geared toward one nationality, race, or creed. Look at slavery, look at what was done to the Jews by Hitler, look at the history of the Irish when they came to this country, All through history you will find that many of mankind wanted everyone to be the 'same'. People don't like change, yet the entire planet is all about differences and that's what makes it so wonderful. How boring it would be if everyone were the same. I was raised by parents who abhorred ignorance of different races, creeds or colors. From the time we were able to understand, we were taught NEVER, to treat someone bad because they were different in all aspect. I taught my children the same things. If everyone generation began teaching their children from the time of understanding that the world is full of different people and there is nothing bad in that, what a wonderful world we could have. But because of this ignorance, we have gangs who won't get along, we have hate crimes against gays, blacks, different creeds. I can't understand why we can't all get along. Listen up people, God created all equal and for me, i will never be prejudice against anyone. God bless our differences. Oh, lets not forget the Native American Indian. They were treated the worst in my eyes. Their land was stolen, they were driven out of it, forced to walk miles to get to another place and country. Remember the "Trail of Tears". If that wasn't a hate crime by the government, I don't what is.

Hate crimes are commited because of prejudice and ignorance and it's worse because with a little tolerance, understanding and education they can all be avoided 100% People are free to think what they want, but the fact of the mattr is thoughts become desires which become actions, so the simplest way is to fight the root cause of the problem, and so people that everyone is essentially the same and not to fear differences, and people who just hate regardless, well they're just bad people

I think the whole "Hate Crime" thing is ridiculous. It is only a means used by politicians to divide the country and curry the favor of one group over another. Regular old prosecution of regular old crimes is just fine, probably better.

It is a deterrent law. It is a sociological perhaps even biological perspective about the nature of man.
Basically saying, men are inheriantly evil and will pick on the weak and outcasts of society. The hate law is suppose to be a silent advocate to protect human rights and dignity.
I guess you have to be a victim of a hate crime to understand it first.
Danny k you are an idiot...you have freedom of speech dummy. You are the one wanting to take rights away from people. Think about it. You and me love pussy. Do you think someone would really love a bung hole if they weren't born tht way. Live your life and get over it!

A hate crime is a thought crime. I am sure the victim of a "non" hate crime doesn't feel better because their attacker didn't hate them.
It is the crime we should punish. My fear is that the proponents of hate crimes will one day want to punish people for the "hate" even if there is no crime.

Presumably its because someone who commits a crime based on their hatred of a certain group or culture will not show any remorse because they would believe that their actions were justified. This would suggest that they may repeat the offence again in the future. Thats why its worse than a "standard issue" crime.

Hate crimes are a way for liberals to take away freedom from people. example If I believe that homosexuality is a sin and I state it at church i could be arrested for a violation of a hate crime.
