Plse help me to choose the correct answer to d 2 question.

The other answerers are correct. Here's why:

1. the first verb must agree with the verbs that follow:
stepped, slipped, fell

2. the second verb must agree with the first verb:
washes, puts

Q1, the word "slipped" is a clue that the event had already happened in past tense, so "stepped" would be the logical choice, because thats also in the past tense.

Q2, the sentence is phrased to denote John is being observed as he goes about his task. "puts" is the only word that makes the sentence sounds grammatical correct. I've tried the other options, and it just didn't sound grammatically right.
