Because American culture (in the USA) is a younger culture and is still dancing around the edges of theocracy, whether they realize it or not. Western Europe has figured out that it results in things like genocide, the Inquisition, the Crusades, etc., and has abandoned the idea of mixing religion and government.

In the last two decades, the theo-crats have taken the reins of not only the US government, but also the political "spin", and they have turned the term "liberalism" into a negative connotation. It began with that "great communicator" Ronald Reagan--you know, the man with Alzheimers that the majority of people in the USA voted into office in the early 80s? The man had a deteriorating mental capacity that his spin meisters turned into an amusing and endearing style of answering the press--the fact he never remembered anything wasn't a joke. He had Alzheimers. That doesn't come on quickly. The press just went along respectfully. Too bad for the USA that they dropped the ball. They should have done so much more to expose this lie. Where are Woodward and Burnstein when you need them?!?!

The pendulem will swing back, eventually. It always does. It has to reach a point where the theo-crats really begin to dictate morally to a point where they are stepping on the toes of the mushy middle, who idealize everything and voted them in. Stay tuned.

Because the country is extremely conservative at the moment, at least in name. Personally, I don't see much conservatism in how they are squandering money and trying to control people's lives through legislation.

So right now, it is live and let live and allow people to choose for themselves what's morally right, as long as they are Christian. Congress just passed a resolution emphasizing the contributions of Christians to this country, because they want to make sure everybody else knows who the "real" citizens and patriots are. I guess the rest of us are just second-class citizens.

It's really a matter of semantics. Obviously when people refer to Blair as a "neo-liberal" they are calling him what Americans would refer to as a conservative. In the US "liberal" has long referred to the bourgeois soft-left rather than the word's original definition.

Liberalism in America means socialism to me. The majority of those people labeled liberal want the government to take care of their problems. I don't want more government control. I don't want government help, I want them to get out of my way so that I can succeed.
