A flyback or line output transformer (FBT or LOPT) is a type of transformer used in the power supply of a cathode ray tube that generates the high voltage needed to drive a CRT type monitor and it can also be used to power a plasma globe. It generates a voltage ranging from a few kilovolts for an oscilloscope tube to 20 to 30 kilovolts for a color TV tube. Unlike a mains (line) transformer, which works with sinusoidal alternating currents at 50 or 60 hertz, a flyback transformer operates with switched currents at much higher frequencies.

A flyback transformer works at the horizontal sync frequency of the video signal.

eg. if we have a TV picture made up of 625 lines, at 25 frames per second, then the horizontal sync frequency = 625 * 25 = 15625Hz = 15.625kHz.

The horizontal scan current is fed through the primary winding. The sudden change in current, as the electron beam is jerked sharply back to the left-hand side of the screen, causes a large back EMF in the secondary winding. This is rectified and smoothed (often using a voltage multiplier) to produce the anode acceleration voltage for the CRT.

Electronics is a great hobby, but, like with so many things in life there are a few dangers to be aware of, and, this is one of them! I would say that you are making a very stupid mistake by going ahead with such a project as it could very well be your last one! From the details of your question I would suggest that your not entirely a novice, still, If you have any doubt about it the dangers involved then read any of the warnings given in TV manual! But, to answer your question, the LOPT core is normally ferrite and runs best around 40kHz. The primary drive is usually driven by a power FET mounted on a heat sink and 5A is probably about right. If you are looking to make 'sparks' , then find an alternate method. Take my advice, leave this project well alone - you'll live longer and others may do too!
