I PURCHASED AN ASPIRE 4520. ON THE BOX IT SAID THE RAM IS 512 MB BUT WHEN I CHECKED IT SHOWS 448 MB. WHY?

Your on board video is using using 64mbs of your ram (making your half a gig shared memory) buy a video card.

The missing memory is being used by your video card. It has to have memory to hold the information that is on your display. By setting that memory aside exclusively for the video, your laptop is able to run much faster then it would without that assigned memory. But that means that memory is not available for Windows to use, so Windows will not show it under the available RAM amount. This is normal.

Your graphics card memory is shared. This means that the ram's total of 512MB is being shared between the motherboard and the graphics card (I.E. 448MB available to the PC, 64MB available to the graphics card = 512MB)

You may be able to change this in the BIOS, but not always - you'll have to check!

Manufacturers NEVER "round" ANYTHING at the risk of false adertising claims! (Sorry Zak!)

because u share ur memory with ur video card .
chk ur settings u will c 64mb of shared memory in ur video setup

yeah you share it with video and sound cards.
