Our well pump and heat pump were the first things we noticed to go. Some lights flickered and the heat pump died. We later noticed the water out and now have noticed the oven does not work or any other things running on 220. We have a breaker box with a main breaker at the top. HOw do we locate the problem?

Only the 240 volt is out? Both sides of the 120 volt are working? Call the power company to check your service. Don't bother fooling with this yourself. The last call I had like this was the overhead feeder wires to the house had rubbed through and shorted. Usually those are the power company's responsibility.

first thing to do is reset the main breaker in the house if this did not fix the problem call your local power company and have them come check the meter out....what the problem is that one leg of the 240 volt power is out ...this could be because one side of the meter base burned out(common problem) one side of main breaker went bad...if the power company tells you that there is nothing wrong with their system after checking it then call an electrician or have an electrican be there while power company is there....

if only the 220 went out then you have lost a leg on the circuit..restet your breakers.Ther should be a door on your circuit panel box in it contains several breakers. If one breaker is slightly off from the rest it has tripped. Flip it to the off then back to on. If it trips again. then you have a short on the circuit. it is very possible that you have lost a leg to your service.i.e. from the pole to the service panel. That's the power company concern

First off check all of your circuit breakers or fuses if any are tripped or blown replace them. If they trip or blow again right after replacement either you have overloaded the circuit or there's a short somewhere. If you aren't up to par with figuring out where the problem is call an electrician don't mess with it yourself if you don't know what your doing.

If the 220v power (or "service" as we call it) went out to your house then you won't have any power at all.

None. Zip. Nada.

If you are familiar with a multimeter you can safely check the incoming power inside your electrical panel. If you do not have this ability then ask someone who does.

If you have lights in your home (or if only a portion of your lights work) then you may have lost a leg coming from the transformer. Older transformers blowing fuses or shorting is not uncommon. Also check for birds nests and dead squirrels near your weather head (where your power lines actually connect to your home.)

Have your power checked as I described and be prepared to call the power company.

Have a look at the breaker - it may have tripped off. If so, you should be able to reset it.

If that doesn't seem to be the problem it might be an idea to see if your neighbour has lost their power too? Perhaps there is a problem with the supply?
