"Blood and Bones" directed by Yoichi Sai and starring Takeshi Kitano was excellent IMO. If you like ultraviolence watch "Izo" directed by Takashi Miike. Miike is notorious for shocking films like "Audition" but he's directed everything from splatter to comedies to childrens films. For a Miike comedy check out "Zebraman". If you want to see a Miike musical watch "Happiness of the Katakuris". He didn't forget the kids either-"The Great Yokai War".

Scrap Heaven (2005) with Kuriyama Chiaki, Kase Ryo, and Odagiri Jo. Bright Future (2003) with Asano Tadanobu and Odagiri Jo. Reincarnation (2006?) (Japanese horror), Zatoichi with Kitano Takeshi, Train Man (Densha Otoko) with Yamada Takayuki.

- Ping Pong (2002) - very funny!

- Ichi The Killer (2001) - a rather psychotic film, it's like Kill Bill but with more violence. If you like this, you might wanna see other films directed by Takashi Miike which mostly are intriguingly unique. Many of his films are not for the weak of heart though.

- Battle Royal (2000) and Battle Royale 2 (2003) - the second one is not as good as the first one.

- Letter From Iwo Jima (2007)

- One Litre Of Tears (2005) - this was based on a dorama (Japanese drama series). Very touching and it was based on a true story.

- Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (2005)

- Survive Style 5+ (2004) - bizarrely hilarious

- Water Boys (2001) - this is a funny movie about male high school students learning to compete in synchronised swimming competition.

- Three... Extremes (2004) - 3 short horror films made by 3 famous directors from Japan, Korea & China (Takashi Miike, Chan-wook Park, Fruit Chan)

- Azumi (2003)

I think more info on all these films are available on www.imdb.com.

If you also like anime, you might wanna see Hayao Miyazaki's films. I personally recommend Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Spirited Away (2001) and My Neighbor Totoro (1988).

Hope this helps! :)

Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano has directed a few brilliant, but quite violent films, 'Hana-Bi' is an excellent one although it is over 10 years old now. (Interestingly all his films tend to have a scene where somebody plays on a beach).

Also Hayao Miyazaki's anime are pretty brilliant. And 'Akira' is a classic anime to get you started too.

And then there's J Horror, like 'The Ring' or 'Dark Water'.
