Manual transmission is controled by foward and reaward movement of shifter shafts that move selectors to engage gears inside the transmission. Modern automatic Trans' uses solonids and manual valve. There are air operated cyls that can select the gears. Also there are new two clutch systems that pre engages the gear that the car thinks you'll need. Slowing the next lower gear and speeding up the next higher gear. Those can shift in .02 seconds. WITH OUT MORE INFORMATION AS TO WHAT YOUR ATTEMPTING I have to say a small stepper motor to control the manual or automatic shifts is not possable. Or are you trying to syncronize the speed of the output shaft to the speed of the gears?
