the enabler allows a person to behave in a certain way even if its wrong, and the enabler often protects the party doing the wrong, and cannot see reality.

An enabler is a person who compulsively helps other people do something. Philanthropists are frequently enablers because they give money so that somebody else can do something worthwhile with it.

just my opinion but i think it means that you may be treated a certain way (usually bad) and that part of the reason is because you are allowing this to happen eg if your kid is on drugs and you are always blaming it on somebody accept him then you are not allowing him take responsiblilty for the problem and therefore you are part of the problem and enabling him to behave like that - enabler.

It means that you are enabling the person to do what he or she wants, you are supporting them in whatever they are doing, like you are supporting a certain habit or something.

some instances:

your sister is a drunk and repeatedly calls you in the middle of the night for a ride home from the bar - you continue to go and pick her up, telling yourself you'd feel awful if she were in an accident because you didn't do it

your brother is horrible with money - his power is cut off several times a year and he is persistently late paying the mortgage - about every four months he asks you for a few hundred bucks to cover food, rent, utilities, whatever - and you continue to shell it out telling yourself that you don't want his young children to suffer

your grown child moves back home because he/she has lost a job and needs time to get back on his/her feet - five years later he/she is still there and making no efforts to move out, in fact he or she has just invited a 'friend' to move in with them - you say nothing because after all your child is a grown up and her/his personal life is none of your business

Being a safty net for someone. Never letting them hit bottom to learn a lesson. Don't be one. It hurts them far more than helping. Let them hit the floor and they will hopefully straighten up. Put them out of your life . Try tough love. It works.
