Le Chevalier D'eon. 24 Eps. The best recent anime I've seen. Solid plot, excellent characters and it's historical. The setting is France during Louis XV; D'eon, a knight of France is determined to solve his sister's murder and defend the monarchy against revolutionists who seem to have mysterious powers... Beautiful plot (it coincides with historical events, though it's not accurate); beautiful well-defined characters; amazing graphics and animation! The visual techniques here are great! I'm even impressed with the English dubbing. Definitely a must see.
Elfen Lied. 13 Eps. BLOOD, GORE...nudity, amputations...and oh did I say blood and amputations? Horror (the blood spilling and spraying variety). It has a well-paced story, well defined characters , beautiful graphics and thought provoking themes.
Hellsing. 13 Eps. Horror, of the vampire variety. The Hellsing organization, led by Integra, must fight the reckless artificial vampires plaguing Europe, with the help of a powerful vampire, Alucard. Great story. there are noteworthy character design differences from the manga, but it does not really take away anything. The graphics are not so great; but the characters are v. compelling. The English dub is wonderful.
DeathNote. Horror + Suspense. Light Yagami, a bored genius, finds a notebook that can kill people...and decides to "cleanse" the world. The out-thinking, out-witting war between the characters are incredible. The second part of the series gets a little disappointing character wise, but it's worth watching anyway. If you like detective stories; you'll like this. Awesome graphics; great plot twists. ooooh it's brain food!
Veohtv. I recommend getting this ^^
:D I love Jigoku Shoujo. It's v. interesting. Lain is also v. interesting...it burned my brain a lot while I was watching it. Lol. Spirited Away is a must see, definitely. Awesome recs.

As someone previously said, Bleach is great. Not necessarily horror (though it has death in it) but supernatural and lots of adventure. I also liked Gantz (definitely horror and quite bloody) and Hellsing is also great (the main character is Alucard...Dracula). Another great one...Death Note. That's pretty new (in the US) but I'm really enjoying it.

Truth is always more interesting than fiction. Perhaps, you should look into natural phenomena rather than Japanese based anime. It's just a suggestion. I myself am fasinated by death, life, astrology, horoscopes, history, the human body, ghosts, and simply taboo subjects that no one likes discussing. You should research it. You may actually like it!
