Because with an Australian accent Australia comes out sounding kind of like Oztralya. It's just an abbreviation.

It's just wordplay. It's short for Aus, the first 3 letters. I think they changed the letters because some people might mispronouce Aus (like it might rhyme with mouse), but Oz is less likely to be mispronounced.
