It now seems that all professional American sportsmen (apart from golfers) cheat. Why should this be?

The Mitchell report is only the latest disclosure in a long history of cheating in American so-called sport. The fact that the people mentioned are held up to the young as heroes perhaps explains why American youth drug culture is so strong.
There must be a reason. Does anyone know what it is?

They do it for the same reasons why everybody else cheats. They want to get ahead of their competition and they know they can't do it without getting an unfair advantage.
