Communism wasn't a useable/viable theory until the late 19th century so has no relevance to the question. Most of the Russian defeats were at the hands of the Mongols the Lithuanian and Polish Empires. At this time a lot of wars were fought for reasons of Religion mostly because a lot of the noblemen were tired of the Roman Catholic hold on the money and people. So more from power reasons than religious ones they would support Protestant religions or return to Catholicism to get power. Russian orthodox was fairly tight with the pope and especially to the Tsar. Russia still wanted ports that were not seasonal so the Baltic and Black sea ports were the main goals.

secure ports
at that time sweden occupied the area of today's finland, latvia and estonia- effectively cutting off russia from the baltic sea.
turkey held the shores of the black sea- cutting off russia from sea trade there
the only accessible sea port for russia was Murmansk- way north and in dangerous waters
the russians wanted a "window on the world". so they waged a war to get what they wanted

funny how this never gets called "colonialism" or some such
